San Francisco は皆さんよくご存知の街、street car電車が坂を上り下りするロマンチックな街、Fisherman’s wharfもカニなど色々な魚介類が食べられ人気の場所だ。近くのGoden gate bridge金門橋も公園があり素晴らしい。それにこの橋の下は潮流が激しい。ここからSan Jose サンノゼあるいはIT産業のメッカ、シリコンバレーにも行ける。日本航空のアメリカの訓練地Napaナパへも行ける。周辺にはWineのBrewery醸造所があり、園を備えた販売店がある。日本の道の駅を立派にしたものだ。　

さて先般、Californiaの州都、Sacramento近くの人口8,000人ぐらいの街で奇妙な事件があった。先に進む前にSacramentは上空を何回も訓練で飛行したが、水に囲まれた落ち着いた州都だった。一度は行ってみるといいですよ。されその奇妙な事件とは、８歳の少女が何回も刺され死亡した事件。一緒にいた１２歳の少年は、Hispanic系の人間が押し入り、刺したとのこと。また住民の一人もそのような人間が走り去るのを見たとの証言。街は極度に緊張した。何せこの街は鍵もかけずに眠られる静かな街だったからだ。捜査は続き、結局１２歳の少年が犯人として逮捕された。親は娘を失い息子は逮捕され悲哀にくれた。街も呆然となった事件だった。

関係副詞whereの基本的な用法は次のような形です。

関係副詞は副詞の一種で修飾語の役割をする

　　関係副詞は前置詞＋関係代名詞にできる　

関係詞はwhen (in, at, on + which) , where ( in, at, to, from + which) ,

why( for which) , how については下記

簡単な文法だが、時間のないTOEIC試験での常連の問題
１：I visited the city where(in which) Mr.Sato works.

２：I visited the city which Mr.Sato likes.　 

  ２：　 Mr.Yoshida likes the cityという文章が成り立つので関係代名詞

 １：　 Mr.Sato works the cityという文章が成りたたない。

 Mr.Sato works in the cityと前置詞が必要になってくる

だから、１の文章はwhereあるいはin whichが必要になってくる

 次の問題で再確認しよう

It's not a restaurant _________ I would really recommend.
(A) that
(B) where
(C) to where
(D )to which

前置詞＋関係副詞は絶対ないのでCは不可、またrecommendは他動詞

で次に直接目的語がくる。言い換えれば（自動詞＋前置詞はこない）ので

関係副詞where 、それの言い換えのto whichも不可。理由↓

when (in, at, on + which) , where ( in, at, to, from + which) , why( for which)

よって関係代名詞のthatかwhich, whichがないので、答えはthat.　 

This is the house where he lives. →　This is the house in which he lives.

→This is the house which he lives in. (This is the house in where he lives. 不可)

This is the house which he bought last year.　

ここで憶えておこう、

従属節に自動詞があれば関係副詞・・この場合自動詞＋前置詞の前置詞が隠れている従属節に他動詞があれば関係代名詞which

整理すると（ここから先は時間がある人のみ）

 ○ 関係詞はwhen (in, at, on + which) , where ( in, at, to, from + which) ,

　　why( for which)　と書き換え可能、howはちょっと違う（下）

○howは常に先行詞なしで用いられ（する方法・手段　する次第）で名詞節を導く

     Do you know how the bird builds its nest?

 但しhow は先行詞way を用いる場合は( the way in which, the way (that)),

the way howは存在しない

Judging from the way in which he succeeded as a businessman, he must have a iron        mind.

The best way (that) you can master a foreign language is to go to the country               where it is spoken.

追記

　　通常は混乱しない事ですが、関係副詞howをやっているとふと混乱する疑問副詞　

～どんなふうに、どんな状態で方法、状態、手段を尋ねることと中学で習いました。

関係詞howとは違う。（疑問詞には疑問代名詞、疑問形容詞、疑問副詞がある）

                         How shall I write a letter?

                          How is the patient today?

○ 同じくwhen, where, whyにおいて先行詞が省略されて名詞節になる

This is when (the time when) the station is most crowded.

The traffic accident happened a few meters from where (the place where) I stood.

That is why (the reason why) I do without a stove throughout winter.

○ when, where はまた（する時に、する所へ）と言う意味で接続詞になる。

When (at the time when) I called on her, she was playing the piano.

Put the letter where ( at the place where) he can find it easily.　

関係副詞は最も難しいですね。関係副詞はそれが導く関係詞節は副詞で修飾語の役割、名詞節になる、接続詞になる。頭が混乱します。時間があるとき極めよう。ここでは最初のTOEICの試験だけを注意！
